UNI-VEE Product FAQ’s
Here are just a few examples:
Virtually every shop can benefit from workpiece portability. The Indexing Base Plate is an inexpensive means to accomplish the transfer between stations, without additional setups. Or, if you already have modular tooling, integrate UNI-VEE into your current program.
With UNI-VEE, you can install, secure, and remove Workpieces off-machine to increase your machinery’s available spindle time. This is valuable in both Prototype and Production environments.
Rough out on older machines, making them productive again and preserving the accuracy of your more expensive ones. Use your UNI-VEE + Indexing Base Plates on that neglected Radial Arm to pre-drill, or on that Milling machine to remove initial stock, boosting productive spindle time on both roughing and finishing machines.
On horizontal machines, mill-and-cutoff operations using bar stock become practical due to the quick action of UNI-VEE’s toggle locking mechanism.
Take advantage of UNI-VEE’s 180 degree indexing to accurately produce details on parts longer than your table travels.
Measure off-machine without removing the Workpiece from UNI-VEE. Thread size checking, off-machine fitting,…if another cut is needed, re-fasten UNI-VEE and continue cutting.
Leave the Workpiece installed in UNI-VEE for additional operations. Finish tapping, deburring, inserting…
In fact, UNI-VEE offers so many ways to be valuable that the greatest challenge comes after using it in that initial application, knowing that its purchase was completely justified on that basis alone. Don’t stop there! We encourage UNI-VEE users to fully explore each feature to determine how advantageous it is to your shop, certainly the time spent to do so will be well worth it. If you obtained UNI-VEE because of its remarkable size range, look into using the Exchangeable Jaw feature. If it was for the flush mounting on your XY mill table, explore UNI-VEE’s use on your rotary table. If it was for the quick toggle-action, don’t miss out on UNI-VEE’s indexing feature.
After using UNI-VEE, we believe you’ll agree that it “Should’ve been made 100 years ago”, and belongs in the same, fundamental shop tooling group as the milling vise, lathe chuck, and angle plate.
The exchangeable jaws can also easily support additional fixtures, like a collet holder or a chuck for smaller shapes, or custom shop-made fixtures for special needs.
For instance, when the Workpiece + UNI-VEE set up occurs off- machine, the Indexing Base Plate is attached to the machine element and the CDP is located before the UNI-VEE is installed.
Extending this protocol to more machines, you can see that all machines using the Indexing Base Plate can be setup prior to fastening any Workpiece + UNI-VEE combination.
Technical Specifications
The overall block size was determined primarily by weight;
The Workpiece Ø size range to 12″ was pre-established;
The resistance to bending is adversely affected by an increased “V” depth;
30° limited general side load resistance at some chain angles and raised center heights at smaller Ø’s;
A simplified calculation using convenient numbers was needed for finding Workpiece CL height;
Simplified Calculation?
Actually, yes!…The cosine of this angle is an even .8 which is about as good as it gets because not only can you divide the Workpiece radius by this number to get the distance from the intersection of the “V”, you can also multiply that same radius by 1 1/4 to get the same result. If you’re like us, the latter is handier away from a calculator. And you’ll notice that the “V” intersection is 3 1/2″ from the bottom surface of the UNI-VEE. Sounds fairly convenient, but if you work from the Common Datum Point, the distance is 2″… (even better)! What’s all this look like on paper? Here’s an example for an 8″ diameter Workpiece…
4″ * 1 1/4 + 2″ = 7″
And as you can see, there’s less keystrokes on the calculator if you do:
4/.8+2=7
And if you’re a lathe guy that’s used to diameters:
8/1.6+2=7
Any way you choose, the CL height from the CDP can be found quickly… and that’s a big help in job bidding, setup, machine choice, and programming!
